Posted on 11/06/2024

Here are some things you can do during a power outage:
  • Unplug appliances: Unplug any electronics or appliances that use electricity to prevent damage from electrical surges.

  • Keep freezers and refrigerators closed: A refrigerator can keep food cold for about four hours, and a full freezer can keep its temperature for about 48 hours.

  • Use a generator: If you use a generator, make sure to use it outdoors and away from windows. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and don't connect it to your home's electrical system.

  • Use emergency lighting: Use a flashlight for emergency lighting, but don't use candles.

  • Check on neighbors: See if your neighbors are also without power and if they are okay.

  • Report the outage: Contact your utility company to report the outage.

  • Listen to the radio and television: Listen to local radio and television for updates.

  • Check for heating and cooling locations: Find out if there are any heating or cooling locations open near you.

  • Have an emergency kit: Have a kit with tools to help you survive without electricity or clean water.

POWER OUTAGE TIPS -

  • Keep freezers and refrigerators closed.
  • Use a generator, but ONLY outdoors and away from windows.
  • Do not use a gas stove or oven to heat your home.
  • Disconnect appliances and electronics to avoid damage from electrical surges.
  • Have alternate plans for refrigerating medicines or using power-dependent medical devices.
  • Check with local officials about heating and cooling locations open near you.

After POWER is restored -

  • When in doubt, throw it out! Throw away any food that has been exposed to temperatures 40 degrees or higher for two hours or more, or that has an unusual odor, color or texture.
  • If the power is out for more than a day, discard any medication that should be refrigerated, unless the drug’s label says otherwise. Consult your doctor or pharmacist immediately for a new supply.
