After a microchip company "Save This Life" which mainly operates on the West Coast abruptly shut down, animal shelters and related organizations have started to warn pet owners to re-register their animals with a different service.

A microchip could save your pet's life, but not if it doesn't work properly. When a lost pet with a microchip ends up at a shelter, staff can scan it to find out who the owner is and get in touch.

If your pet has a Save This Life microchip, it will no longer show up in a database and there won't be a way for a shelter to contact you. The registry lookup tool for Save This Life microchips says the company's data was removed last month and is disconnected from the database.

Find your pet’s microchip number. You can check your pet’s adoption papers or medical records to find the number, or have it scanned at a veterinarian’s office or animal shelter.

Look up the number to see what company it is registered with. You can use the American Animal Hospital Association website here, which will tell you what company the chip is registered with.
