The Sand Fire started at 2:14 PM on Friday July 22 near the northbounds HWY 14 and Sand Canyon Road. Currently the fire is approximately 11,000 acres and is 10% contained. Los Angeles County Fire and the Forest Service are in unified command. About 300 plus firefighters are engaged in initial attack. Resources include 126 engines, 14 hand crew, 28 helicopters, 8 fixed wing aircraft and 7 dozers. The area is under Red Flag Warning. Winds are coming in from the East at 10 MPH with gusts of 12 MPH with average 106 degree temperature. There is also a smoke advisory that was issued by the South Coast Air Quality Management. The cause is under investigation and the high temperatures, low humidity, high winds are cause for concern.
As of now the mandatory evacuations are in place for residents living on Little Tujunga Canyon Rd above Gold Creek to Bear Divide.
