Born of immigrant parents who taught her to work hard and never forget of her heritage, M and has now been a resident for over 47 years. She attended local Sylmar schools: Sylmar Elementary, Olive Vista Jr High, Sylmar High and attended LA Mission College before graduating from CSU Northridge. She is a mother of four and her children attended Sylmar schools 3 of the 4 have gone on to college. Her husband is a decorated retired Army veteran and also grew up in Sylmar.
Maria has worked for the Los Angeles Unified School District for over 16 years and has volunteered and taught in Sylmar schools including Los Angeles Mission College. She has worked hard to earn a BA degree in Speech Communication Studies, a Masters Degree in Education and a second Masters Degree in Education Administration and Leadership along with her CA Teaching and Administrative credentials.
Maria has held the Education seat on the council since 2014 and has served as Outreach Chair, Budget Representative, and the Public Relations Chair. She is currently serving her second term as the Education Representative of all the Sylmar schools. Maria is a passionate educator and continues to proactively solicit the opinions of stakeholders in making decisions and is responsive to the community needs. She believes more outreach within the neighborhood can be done to support growth and needs. As an educator Mrs. Silva as she is known, understands the diverse needs of a school and as a resident wants this city to thrive. She first handedly knows that Sylmar has many hard working and dedicated educators that give of their talents everyday to help the youth of the community. Her efforts have not gone unoticed as she has recieved several recognition awards and certificates from public officicials such as Congressman Tony Cardenas, Senator Barbara Boxer, LAUSD Board, and LA Mayor Eric Garcetti. Maria knows with effort and selfless service more can be done for our youth and for our community schools. She is well-known in the community and is available upon your request. She feels it is an honor to serve the place where she grew up, lives and cares much about.
