Sylmar Fire Station 31 - Steps are moving forward, Funds are growing $850,000!

Posted on 05/10/2026

After more than 20 years of advocacy, Sylmar is finally moving forward with a second fire station, LAFD Station 31, aimed at reducing dangerously high emergency response times in a rapidly growing population and high-risk, 12-square-mile area. LA City Councilwoman Monica Rodrigez secured a site on Foothill Boulevard with additional funding from Congresswoman Luz Rivas of $850,000 as of May 2026, aimed at reducing emergency response times.

The new station, located near the north end of Sylmar, aims to address long-standing concerns from residents and provide faster, critical service to the surrounding hills.

Latest Updates (May 2026):
  • Property Secured: City officials secured the site at 16300 Foothill Boulevard for the new Fire Station 31.
  • Funding Secured: Congresswoman Luz Rivas secured $850,000 in federal funding to support construction. This is in addition to millions in municipal funds previously designated for the project.
  • Design Phase: The project is in the planning and design phase, with efforts underway to address long-standing safety deficits in the Northeast San Fernando Valley.
  • Addressing Concerns: The new station aims to reduce response times for a community currently served by only one station (Station 91) and often impacted by wildfires, such as the Creek Sayre, Saddle Ridge, and more recent Hurst Fire that occurred the same day as the Palisides and Eaton fires.

Background on the Need:

  • High-Risk Area: Sylmar is designated as a "Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone," placing families at risk, according to the Sylmar Neighborhood Council.
  • Outdated Coverage: For decades, only Fire Station 91 covered one of the largest geographical areas in the San Fernando Valley, leading to overloaded resources, notes the Sylmar Neighborhood Council. Sylmar Currently, Sylmar has one station, Station 91, which is one of the busiest in the City of Los Angeles.
  • Long Delays: The project was previously delayed for over 20 years, causing residents to demand action, as reported by FOX 11 Los Angeles.
