Posted on 06/29/2026

What is the 4th of July celebrated for?

The 4th of July, also known as Independence Day, celebrates the birth of the United States as an independent nation. It commemorates the historic adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, by the Continental Congress, which declared the thirteen American colonies free from British rule.

Key Historical Details:
  • The Vote: While delegates formally voted in favor of declaring independence on July 2, 1776, the formal text of the Declaration of Independence was adopted two days later on July 4.

  • The Founders:
The document was primarily authored by Thomas Jefferson. Notably, both Jefferson and John Adams, two of the key Founding Fathers, passed away exactly 50 years later on July 4, 1826.
Common Traditions:
Americans celebrate the holiday with a variety of patriotic and summer activities, including:

  • Fireworks Displays: The tradition of lighting fireworks dates back to the very first anniversary of independence in Philadelphia in 1777.
  • Community Events: Parades, concerts, and historical ceremonies are held in cities and towns across the country.
  • Family Gatherings: Backyard barbecues, picnics, and family reunions are staples of the day.

In celebration of Independence Day, US residents will not be be charged entrance fees at national parks on July 4, 2026. Find more information about entrance fees and passes.
