LA City Council making moves to regulate e-bikes

The Los Angeles City Council unanimously voted to direct city departments to draft a comprehensive local regulations for e-bikes, e-motos, and electric mopeds to address rising accidents, illegal speed modifications and fire hazards.
Proposed City Regulations
- New Restrictions: The Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) must report back with recommendations within 90 days, which may include banning non-compliant vehicle sales and prohibiting modifications that increase factory speeds.
- Training Requirements: Officials are considering mandatory safety and educational training courses for riders under 18 or those who do not possess a standard driver's license.
- Trail Bans: The city is moving forward with a separate ordinance to ban electric bikes from local hiking, equestrian, and designated non-motorized recreational trails.
