TRIVIA TUESDAY!

What do you call a Full Moon in March?

A.) Harvest Moon

B.) Blue Moon

C.) Worm Moon

The ANSWER is -   C.) Worm Moon

The worm moon is the name given to the full moon that occurs in March. It's named for the earthworms that emerge from the thawing ground in the spring.

How it got its name
  • The name comes from Native Americans who noticed earthworm trails in the newly thawed soil.

  • The name is part of a traditional naming system for full moons.

  • Other tribes named the moon based on other signs of spring, such as the cawing of crows.

Why it's changing

  • The significance of the worm moon may be decreasing due to climate change.
  • Earthworms may be becoming more active during colder or drier months.
  • Plants may be flowering earlier and animals may be emerging at the wrong time.
Other names for the March full moon

  • The Snow Crust Moon or Hard Crust on the Snow Moon from the Ojibwe and Chippewa tribes
  • The Sap or Sugar Moon from the Shawnee
  • The Warming Moon from the Shoshone
  • The Wind Strong Moon from the Pueblo people
  • The Eagle Moon from the Algonquin
